How You Can Improve Your Songwriting Skill...

Are you a beginning songwriter who strives towards writing songs that become hits? Do you need to know how you can improve your songwriting skill?
It's not too complicated. Don't try to re-invent the wheel. As far as I'm concerned the best way to improve your songwriting is to study what hit songwriters do. Forget about the mediocre stuff and learn from the leaders in the songwriting and music industry. Study what works.

As a songwriter who has written quite a few number one songs in my country, one thing that has helped me and continues to help me is the radio. I listen to the radio all the time so I know what type of song is happening. I know what people like, what they want to hear, and what is current. This gives me a good idea of what kind of song I should write to target a particular market.

When you listen to the radio, take notes on what hit songs have in common. Study the structure of these songs. What tempo seems to work? Are the chord progressions complicated or are the songs based mainly on riffs? What kind of chords is used? That way you can write songs that appeal to today's audience. No matter how good your song is, if it sounds like something that would be better suited to ten or twenty years ago, you can forget it.

It is a shame how some songwriters treat the songwriting craft. I'm sorry, but if you do not spend time at developing your craft you are bound to fail. I don't care if its baseball or dancing, those people who come out and top are the very same ones who practice everyday. Those who spend years at perfecting their craft. So learn form those who were there before you. Study and write songs everyday. Lay hold of songwriting books, get songwriting software, do anything to take you to the next level.

To improve, a songwriter needs to become more knowledgeable everyday. The more things you know about, and the more you can relate to different aspects of everyday life, the better for you. I never heard of a novelist who didn't read constantly. The same applies to songwriting and great songwriters. You must put in a lot of work if you want to excel.

Nothing comes easy in life. Work, work, and work some more. Pattern your writing after what has been proven to work, but never copy. Do it everyday and reap the rewards.

A Poem For A Parent's Funeral

Losing a loved one is a very hard. When it's a parent, the mixture of emotions you experience at this time can be very overwhelming.
Parents are not only the people who brought you into this world, but they have been a constant in your life. A protector, your best friend, a source of wisdom, a shoulder to cry on, a safe harbor in times of trouble and arms to hold you filled with unconditional love.

Planning a funeral for a parent is a very daunting and emotional task. You want to celebrate their life in the most fitting and beautiful way possible, both from the perspective of what they meant to you, but also how they touched and impacted other people's lives.

Finding the right words to say in a eulogy or what verses to include in a funeral service can be difficult. Not all of us are writers or poets and when you have just lost a loved one just simple every day chores seem hard. Trying to write a poem or verse from scratch, especially at such a trying time can be near impossible.

Funeral poetry is a simple but powerful way to express the loss of someone dear to us, in a way which is not only fitting, but it also gives a great deal of comfort to all who hear it.

My friend's mother passed away recently, and she labored for many days trying to find the right words to include at the funeral service. After trying to write a poem of her own, she found a simple yet beautiful poem called "All Is Well" written by Henry Scott Holland which she read at the service.

There have been many beautiful poems written about the loss of a loved one and sometimes the easiest way to find the perfect poem or verse is to look through a collection of memorial poetry. Either you'll find a suitable poem which is fitting, or find one you can use as a framework, which can be modified for a more personal touch.

The death of a parent is an extremely trying time. Sometimes writing about a loved one can be therapeutic as you reflect on your own memories and shared experiences and can be helpful in dealing with and accepting the loss. Also reading memorial poetry that others have written can be calming and helpful at this difficult time.

Urdu Poetry a Historical Perspective

The beginnings of Urdu poetry can be traced as far back as the 13th century, when some poets of in the north of India started experimenting with the style. But the classic form of Urdu poetry that we modern humans have come to know did not really take on a final shape until the 17th century, when Urdu became the official language of the court in the Indian subcontinent.
Urdu poetry gained immense popularity in the 18th century when Urdu replaced Persian as the major language of the region. Urdu poetry has its linguistic roots etched in Persian, Turkish, and Arabic, and this colourful mix of cultural and linguistic conventions was one of the reasons why it came to be loved by so many people in the Indian subcontinent.

In the 18th century, there was a scarcity of newspaper, media, and public information, so Urdu poetry became a way for people to communicate with each other about the social and political woes of the time. One of the most common forms of this communication was called a “Mushaira”, which was a social event where poets gathered to read their works to the audience. The Urdu poetry that was read at these Mushairas adhered to very strict rules of rhythm that were often determined before the event took place. They were sometime also competitive, much like the competitions that were held in the ancient Greek and Roman empires.

At every Mushaira, there was a main, or presiding poet who was usually the most appreciated and honourable poet at the gathering. In the Mushairas of the 18th century, a candle would be passed from the lowest ranking Urdu poet at the gathering to the presiding poet as a sign of respect. Urdu poetry became a highly esteemed art and members of royalty often sought the company of famous poets.

At so it is that the 18th century produced some of the most fascinating works of Urdu poetry. However, many of the most valuable poems of the time were lost because a poet’s works were only published after he achieved fame. With a striking similarity to the world of painted art, many of the most cherished works of a revered Urdu poet were only published several years after his death. The poems of Nazir, perhaps the greatest Urdu poet that ever lived, were only published 80 years after he died.

The study of Urdu poetry’s history is an amazing journey that is full of intrigue for the interested reader. But perhaps the most amazing thing about Urdu poetry is the way it continues to thrive as an art and a form of expression today. In line with the advent of internet, several online Urdu poetry communities have established themselves in cyberspace. Some of these include a Shayari portal of famous poets, an Urdu Poet forum and community, and a website that allows you to download Mushaira audio and video. Today’s fans of Urdu poetry come from many different parts of the world, and the art has received international recognition from some of the most respected literary figures of modern times.

How To Embrace Romance Poetry

Romance poetry is part of society. Just like love and affection cannot be divorced from us, we need romance poetry for everyday life. Sometimes, they say water is life and love is poetry. It is only these beautiful literally words that can make it possible for us to really communicate. The beauty about poetry is that it does not have to be dramatic. There are very many people who get scared at the thought of poetry. It is what we eat and drink, the little sentences that are often neglected. When you wish to speak or write good poetry, there are several things that you need to know. First, you need to consider whether your heart is pure. You do not have to be an angel; however, you need to be sincere. False poetry is one that is not inspired from the heart by love. Therefore, it is not judged by the rhyming words but by the depth of those words. The next time you consider writing it, look deeper and take time, you will definitely impress your audience.
After that brief overview of romance poetry, you need to understand that your most important audience is your spouse. This can also be the person you are in a romantic relationship with. For this reason, you are better placed. You know what they like and what they do not like. You can come up with something very personal or customized just for them in regard to poetry. Romance is a sure builder of all relationships and, you need to be in a position where you are ready and willing to please your mate. The main problem that people find when it comes to lack of romance is the unwillingness to give. I'm talking about giving romance or giving love. It is this act of giving that is able to revitalize your relationship. Therefore, if you want to think poetry, you have to change your mind and attitude. Be a willing giver. This way, you do not have to wait for them to do something for you; you simply take the initiative of loving them.

Romance poetry will not only help your spouse love you better but, it will also make you feel lovable. Loving yourself is necessary before you love another person. Romance poetry while mature will translate to great changes in your relationship. Since you feel better about each other, you will be in a position to romance better further improving intimacy. You will be inspired to find ways of improving your sex life and it can all start with poetry. If you are the kind of macho man who does not believe in the power of poetry, you will have to suffer the consequences of a dry love life. Otherwise, you must believe in the power of poetry for things to be better in your relationship. Most people are lay men and nobody expects you to be a career poet. Breath and feel poetry and the rest will be clear to you.

Make Use of Poetry to Get In Progress with Different Types of Writing

Writing poetry is one of the best things the poet would like to do. If you are stressed with obtaining your writing career going to make an effort to write a few poetries first, then you must be aware of the writing skills of the poem. Poetry can be a simple access point into the humankind of writing regardless of which type you have it in mind to write. Try lettering a pair of lines at whatever time you get an idea. By writing down your feelings into couplets you will enclose the foundation of a long work to be finished soon after. Good poets write poetry for each other in reply to any number of individual relationships.
Poetry is as well a good place for kids to start writing. You don’t have any hard and fast rules; hence there is less anxiety. Punctuation, capital letters, in addition to the spelling rules is hovering so that a kid’s imagination is able to run wild. Kids enjoy writing stupid sentences as well as fantasy expressions, by means of alliteration having a compelling result.

At present, make an effort to be childish in your script as you create some short poetry. Don’t assume too much as you permit your opinion take shape on the manuscript. Merely allow your thoughts to flow. Place your poetry away for a few days and after that see if you can develop upon the thoughts that you enclose to write down.

Psychologists have long made use of poems to get inhabitants to write in relation to what is in fact troubling them. Make use of your poetry to observe what you actually want to write with reference to others to read and take pleasure. Poetry knows how to give you a sense of freedom in your inscription that no other shape can perhaps copy.

Dwell on a serious topic that you are scheduling to write a piece of writing or in relation to a short story. Write it as a cheerful poem and subsequently return to it at some other time later. You would almost certainly observe that you have written a few thoughtful ideas in an easy outline for the reason that you were more comfortable when you had written it in a singsong manner. Give poems a try and observe how your other writing gets better in the end.

new poetry movement

Not, perhaps, since the early days of the so-called New York School of poetry have we seen a movement such as what is now coming out of the lower streets of Boston. "The Boston Poetical Movement" is what future literature historians might well refer to it as. I humbly offer the name here in the hopes the trend might get its deserved acclaim. Just as we had Ashbery, O'Hara, Koch, Schuyler, and Guest as the collective face of the New York School, we are now witnessing poetry history-in-the-making with names like Haasch, Matusek, Shear, and Meissner. Mark the names well. Genius is rare in our times.
The roots go back at least seven years, with influences converging from the now-famous "Summer of Verse" in Cambridge, where a young Vito Heppner first uttered his "Doves are Falling Towards the Ceiling," a double-quatrained villanelle in triple-syllabic hexameter with line breaks randomly chosen based on the rolling of three dice. It was a stroke of brilliance not easily outdone. Except that it was. Nobody need be reminded of Harlin Haasch's triple-quatrained number which followed, and which had the crowd on its feet before the first quatrain was even done echoing off the venerable walls of Pappy's Seafood Hut, where most of the action took place on those hot August nights.

From there the movement snowballed. Haasch self-published his early Boston Poetical poems, invigorating a sleeping, and mostly drunken, Arlo Meissner, whose career had gone almost completely under with the mistaken publication of his Words from My Mother's Goldfish (Tillbury House, 1994), a manuscript his dim-witted half-brother had written for school, and which had gotten sent to the publishers by mistake in a tragic envelope mix-up. Meissner was still trying to live down the infamous collection, including such ditties as "My Dog has Four Paws," a three-hundred line poem written in alternating red and blue crayon. When Meissner read Haasch's poems, something stirred inside, and he once again put pen to paper.

What followed were a symphony of poems, all in the new Boston Poetical style, and not just from Meissner. Others jumped in from around the area. At coffee shops and taverns from Quincy to Woburn, the members of the new movement were inspiring and motivating each other. Late nights and into the early mornings, at Rudolpho Matusek's brownstone, could be heard the strong, oft-inebriated voices of the founders of this new poetry form (much to the dismay on Mrs. Matusek who would cite those late nights in the divorce proceedings one year later). And when certain poems eventually found their way into mainstream literary magazines such as Poetry (Alabaster Shear's "Heaven in the Toilet"), The Atlantic Monthly (Meissner's own "Rolaids, Rolaids, Rolaids"), and even The New Yorker (Haasch's first and fourth versions of "Animal in the Hot Tub"), the movement had finally found some legs.

For those unacquainted with the form, perhaps a short primer is in order. Essentially a poem in the Boston Poetical form is two parts Ginsburg and seven parts Plath. Add in conjoining sprigs of Lowell and Bishop, and a dash of Galway Kinnell and you're halfway there. Poems are typically seven to seventy-seven lines long, with each poem's length in lines evenly divisible by seven. Each line must be a minimum of five, but no more than twelve metric feet (or thirteen diphthongs), with iambic patterns the preferred style, although enjambments and end-stops (heartily encouraged) often makes this preference moot. Rhyme is considered gauche, unless one rhymes a dactyl (or double-dactyl) with an anapest, in which case it's applauded, so long as the rhyme takes place between the sixth and eighth lines, or, failing that, is simply placed in the poem's title. In performing the poems publically, it's considered proper to remain completely silent and motionless for three to four minutes before beginning the poem, all the while keeping one's eyes fixed on the emergency door at the rear of the venue (if there is one).

Subject matter is strictly oblique post post-modern. It's the taking of existential, alto-nihilism and turning it on its head, then putting it back again, but on its side, instead of in standard vertical form. Consequently the focus of the poems is always coming at you from the inside out, resting, first, above the commonplace, and then darting back again before your eyes like a drunken, frenzied mosquito defying the risk of the metaphorical fly swatter of linguistic expression, and with a dash of p'trole lampant for good measure. If one, in other words, can imagine Satre (perhaps more precisely Kierkegaard) being read aloud by Eliot (Pound) with one hand covering his mouth and the other waving (waving) contemptuously, as one dismissing the radicalism of those qui n'ont pas d'id'es, as the French are fond of saying, then I think one can get a true sense of what's being revealed here.

I suspect we'll be hearing a lot more from these "wizards of words" (The New Yorker's apt description) in the months and years to come. Form can be fickle. It's hard now to even remember the so-called "Phlegm-ism" movement from Cleveland in the early eighties, a movement that was supposed to change the face (and hands) of poetry but, instead, found itself rotting in a vacant heap by the river, ultimately to be carried away by the city's sanitation department. But something tells me this is different. Boston Poetics just might be here to stay.

the poetry scam

Has this ever happened to you? You dream of being a published writer and can't wait to get your work in print, or you receive an offer that will make your publishing dreams come true.
Then it is important that you are aware of the poetry scam.

This scam preys on the hopes and aspirations of unassuming authors. It starts out by you contacting several companies and then one of them sends you an email to say you have been selected for publication. You are over the moon. However, before you break out the champagne, you should do some research!

This could be a poetry scam. You are advised that to make it to print you usually have to pay the publication costs yourself. You may be so desperate to get published that you choose to run with it. What you could end up with however is a garage full of books that you have trouble selling. An alternative scenario is that you end up with only a few copies that cost you thousands of
dollars each, or in some cases, you end up with no books at all!

Scammers are very good at deceiving you into believing that they run reputable publishing houses, and will charge you much more money than it would cost if you self-publish on your own.

Publishers or agents who charge reading fees for submissions should also be avoided. It often indicates they are making money from your fees rather than book sales!

For beginner writers looking for success, the most popular method is to get an agent who will submit your work to publishers. If you bypass the agent and deal with publishers who charge for the publication of the books, they are not traditional publishing houses. These sort of companies are known as vanity publishers or print on demand publishers and are usually not regarded highly in the publishing industry.

They tend to charge very high prices, carry out little or no editing, and provide little or no marketing or promotion of the books. The book quality is generally not high. This is not the recommended route for beginner writers.

A recent variation is for self publishing scammers to try to appear as reputable publishers claiming to charge no publisher's fee to accept your book. Instead what they do is require the author to pay an editor from a list the publisher provides, to get the manuscript into shape. In fact the 'editor' is one of the publisher's employees, and the author's money ends up back in the
publisher's pocket.

Avoiding the poetry scam starts when you first begin submitting your work to prospective publishers. Start by checking to see if the publishers are legitimate by looking them up in the Preditors and Editors website. You can also look for publishers in the Writer's Market book.

You should also verify the address of the publisher [scammers tend to use a post office box or drop-off address], and ring the phone number [scammers often don't provide these]. If the contact details such as address, phone, fax and email are not prominently displayed on their web address, look somewhere else to be published.

Join a writer's group such as the Romance Writers of America as it provides the opportunity to ask about any agents or publishers you are considering.

When you finally have a contract, take your time and seek expert advice. No reputable publisher or agent would object to this.

Inspirational poems

Inspirational poems remind us of our need to “walk the walk” and not just “talk the talk.” Words can be inspirational and motivational or be misused and become detrimental to our lives. This poem shows how misuse can erode our society.
Keep your word
No matter what
The cost to you may be.

For those nearby
Believe not what
They hear but what they see.

The character pictured in this poem is difficult to attain. I guess it is one of the virtues that is admired in direct proportion to the amount of selflessness expressed by not going back on your word.

Frequently, people say they will be at a certain place at a certain time but fail to show. Or someone borrows an item and fails to return it. Or a parent promises to take his child somewhere and doesn’t follow through leaving the child disillusioned.

Society today seems to accept that people cannot be counted upon.

But for those who reject this lack of self accountability and seek for a better life and testimony to those around them, planning ahead and counting the cost is their life blood. It’s the only way to live - even when their best plans fail.

It is these people who are admired, blessed, and accomplish the most in life.

This next poem shows us how words can be instrumental as we reprioritize our actions.

Take Care

How did you say
Goodbye this morn?
What were the things you said?

What if they were
Your final words
Until the life ahead?

Once in awhile it is good to stop and take stock of our blessings. Two of these blessings are our children and our parents.

Now, parents is a sore subject with high school students, sometimes. Wrapped up in their social frenzy of getting their friend’s approval, many students give in and talk badly about their parents.

When I sense this in a class, I look for an opportunity to inject a different perspective free of peer pressure bias. I ask them, “What if you got a call on the intercom to come to the office, and when you got there you found a close relative awaiting you with the news that your folks had just been killed in a car wreck? Would you wish you had left the house differently this morning? Would you wish you could change the last things you said as you left?”

Can you imagine the regrets they would have?

Each of us could benefit by carefully and lovingly watching our departures from loved ones in the morning and each time we say goodbye.
Poems like this last one can offer great meaning. To those of us who have had children and have seen them grow up, our die is cast. But for those who are still on that journey, there is time to heed this warning about the use of our words and time.

Unfamiliar Gray

Too busy we
To nurture them
To read, to laugh, to pray.

To busy they
To visit us,
The unfamiliar gray.

It’s a constant battle for a parent to find time to spend with his children. Mom and dad each have responsibilities for providing for their children that take a lot of time and energy. There really isn’t much of either left over at the end of the day.

But why do we parents have children in the first place if we are not going to designate enough time for their growth and nurture? Without enough time spent with parents, children will turn out poorly and surely won’t provide their parents with late life fellowship and care.

The key is two-fold; desire that your kids turn out right and plan ahead to make time to share both words and activities with them.

Remember always to keep your word when you promise something, choose carefully your words when leaving the house in the morning, and make time to use your words for the nurture and admonition of your children.
